14 entrants sailed the five races giving the fleet a discard.

Races were all in the region of 35 minutes in length with some close racing in the choppy seas with wind strength again holding steady between 8 and 12 knots.

Day 3: A scheduled 9:00 am start was delayed to just before 11:00 am with boats starting in 5 knots of easterly breeze.

The wind faded to 2 knots and the leading boat had failed to reach the top mark in less than 20 minutes.

South African Sailing Race Officer’s Guide

31 March 2024 by Alan Leave a Comment

The Object of SA Sailing is the administration, development, co-ordination and promotion of the Sport of Sailing in South Africa.

Download the South African Sailing Race Officer’s Guide.

SA Sailing seeks and holds membership of World Sailing thus permitting races of sail powered craft to be regulated by the World Sailing Racing Rules of Sailing (RRS) at venues / clubs with members who are affiliated to SA Sailing.

The body that plans and runs a sailing event is the Organizing Authority. It may be a club, a class association, a national authority, World Sailing, or a combination thereof any of these. The organizing authority or World Sailing appoints the Protest Committee or international jury. The organizing authority appoints the Race Committee.

The Organizing Authority is responsible for the planning and provision all the logistics required to hold a successful regatta. The application and utilisation of most of these items when managing the racing is the responsibility of the Race Committee.

A guideline for regatta organisers can be found in the SA Sailing Race Organisation Guideline & other documents on the SA Sailing Website https://www.sailing.org.za/home/

Sailing events occur throughout South Africa at varying degrees of importance from Club level races to International Championships. All events require the race officer to have the necessary capabilities matched to the event.

The Race Officers Guide is intended to be used as both a training and development tool for current and future race officers and as a reference for the organizing authority in the planning and running of sailing races. It is hoped that many club/district level race officers will embark on the journey to eventually become certified to run national events.

This document is a guideline and does not replace the RRS. If there is any doubt as to the application of a procedure described in this guide, the RRS will always take precedence.

2024 Dart 18 East Cape Provincials

25 March 2024 by Alan Leave a Comment

Race Officer Report by Alan Straton, (SAS 2019-0034NRO).

Date Submitted: 25/03/2024
Regatta: 2024 Dart 18 East Cape Provinicials
Venue: ELYC
Organised by: Dart 18.
Start Date: 22/03/2024
End Date: 24/03/2024
Total Races Sailed: 8 over 3 Days.

Day 1:

In challenging offshore conditions the Sailing Instructions were amended to include racing within the confines of the Port of East London.

A windward Leeward course was set within the confines of the port and 4 races sailed in the steady east wind ranging from 21 to 30 knots. The regatta was reached after 4 races.

The sea was relatively flat with swell running across the course.

One entrant landed on the rocks against the outer sea wall – the Dart was a write off and both sailors were unharmed.

Owing to the confined space the top mark was set true and the bottom gate off course down a dog leg.

Day 2: Saturday was not sailable due to high winds and a vicious sea state.

Racing was postponed until Sunday after waiting until 3:00 pm for a hoped for abatement in wind strength.

Day 3: High winds continued to plague the offshore course and sailing commenced once again within the confines of the Port with a similar course as per day 1.

Significant changes to the ‘dog leg’ resulted in better adherence to the course.

4 races were sailed in the wind which ranged from 15 knots to 18 knots.

The average race length was 19 minutes per race.

Owing to time pressure the last race started at 12:30 leaving the fleet with just one discard available.
